During July, Ask Yourself “Why?”


As we move into the second half of the year, I reckon it’s a good time to reflect on what you have enjoyed, created and achieved. And to question how the rest of the year can be made even better.

During the month of July, take the time to ask yourself, “has 2018 been a successful /positive year so far?”  And if so, why?  And if not, why not? Asking “why?” is an important practice because it prevents you becoming stuck in a repetitive negative cycle – whether that be at work, relationships, habits or any area of your life.

Self-questioning is an important part of personal development and we all want to keep growing right? So, ask yourself, “why am I in this particular situation?” And consider what motivates you to act as you do. For example, why did you choose your job? Was it to earn money to provide for your family or because it offered a comfortable lifestyle? Or was it the motivators of enjoyment and passion? Often, initial reasons can lose their motivating power over time if the occupation is draining or unenjoyable. If an area of your life has reached this stage of having no motivation or enjoyment, ask yourself why you are continuing with it. Is it financial necessity? Is it fear of change or uncertainty? Or not wanting to disappoint someone? If you feel the need for change, but are unsure whether to make that change, I would recommend writing a list of pros and cons – “why should I make this change and what are the benefits?” Plus, “why should I not make this change, what could be the downside?” Consider which path will help you to grow and bring most enjoyment, and don’t forget that short-term hard work can often lead to long-term happiness and fulfilment.


Once you’ve decided to make the change, ensure you set SMART goals so the outcome is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed.  Goals that are vague and have no due date are much more difficult to achieve because distractions, procrastination and busy schedules are allowed to get in the way. A large final goal, such as changing your job or taking on a new healthier diet, should be sliced into smaller tasks, so that you don’t get overwhelmed. For example, choose a specific aspect of a healthy diet that you want to address first such as drinking less or eating more vegetables per week, and create a numerical goal to reach in that time limit. Remember to check in with “why” you are doing it and also be aware of your motivators, they are essential in helping you achieve your goal. And always remember to reward yourself with activities you enjoy.
